For
a winter real thrill try a run down the Olympic Bobsled
course, just a 5 minute drive from The Lake Placid
Retreat. Beginners cover the half-mile portion and whiz through
the twisting track at 50-plus miles per hour. For the more daring types, a top-to-bottom
run on a padded, four-passenger sled, at speeds in excess of 60 miles per hour,
is offered. Less daring thrill-seekers can try the Lake Placid Toboggan Chute, on Parkside Drive, right near the Post Office. The chute has been running since the 1960's and is made from a 30' high converted ski jump. The slide sends toboggans down ice covered chutes onto frozen Mirror Lake. Toboggans shoot over 1,000 feet once they reach the frozen lake surface. Since the actual outrun of the slide is the frozen lake surface, the official opening day for operation varies from year to year. The chute has been open as early as December 26 but usually starts around the first full weekend in January. For toboggan opening status call 518 523 2591.
